Runnin’ Down a Dream

Are you ready to create positive change in your life?  You don’t need to wait until the New Year to make resolutions.  Why not right now?

Your Main Goal(s):

Which area of your life do you currently deem most important?  Some areas of life include: Family, Career, Finances, Social, Hobbies, etc.  Inevitably, your answer to this question may change over time.  Once identified, create a goal that you have in that area.  As time goes on, when you are ready to work on a second, third, or fourth goal, it may be helpful to choose goals from a variety of life areas in order to maintain a balance in your life.  Your goal can be mundane, such as related to managing your emails. Or it can be a stretch, i.e., a beginner runner with a long-term goal of running a marathon.  Write your main goal down in one sentence, using present tense as though you are already doing what it is that you want to accomplish.  Read these written goals every day.

Examples:
I am easily managing my email correspondences.
I am enthusiastically running across the marathon finish line.

Post a Picture:

Obtain or create a picture that represents your goal at the end result.  Perhaps a picture of an empty inbox, or of a runner crossing the finish line with a big smile.  Post it in a place where you can see it throughout the day.

Visualization Exercise:

Visualize your desired outcome as though it has already happened.  Do this on a regular basis in a peaceful setting with your eyes closed.  Experience the positive feelings that go along with the picture.  Make it as real as possible. What does it feel (see, hear, taste, etc.) like to have accomplished this goal?  The more real and vivid you can bring this to life, using all your senses, the more your mind and body will believe it to be true.  You can even pre-record and play your voice to tell a story during your visualization.

Marathon example:

I picture myself near the starting line warming up before the race.  My muscles are relaxed and strong.  I am confident.  I see runners all around me.  We are in this together.  The excitement is mounting as the runners get ready.  The starting gun goes off.  I am pumped up.  I hear my favorite song playing and I sing along.  I settle into a rhythm.  I find a runner to run next to me.  We keep pace together and motivate each other.  I focus on the runner in front of me, and make my move to pass.  At each mile marker, the time is read out loud by the official timekeeper.  Wow, a personal best time!  I feel alive.  The crowd cheers us on.  I grab a water from a volunteer and thank them.  I am at ease and in the zone.  At the 5 mile mark, I feel great.  At the 10, 15, and 20 mile mark, I am the energizer bunny… still going strong.  I hear a band.  And I smell the food that awaits me.  The finish line is in sight.  I see the time clock above, and give an extra push through the finish line, with my arms in the air and a smile on my face.  I did it!
