As a young man, Ekhart Tolle had challenges with negative thoughts that he constantly ruminated over. Then at his lowest point he had a revelation, which instantaneously caused his ruminating thoughts to dissipate. The revelation had to do with the way in which he referred to himself. Sometimes he would refer to himself as ‘I’, and other times as ‘You’. “How can there be two of me”, he thought. That led him to being completely present in the current moment. His book teaches how anyone in any situation can move from past/future focus, into present focus.
The 2:22 minute YouTube video below contains a portion of an Oprah Winfrey interview with Eckhart Tolle (author of The Power of Now) on one method to lessen, and even eliminate, stress.
“Accept this moment as if you had chosen it.” – Eckhart Tolle
“Resisting the moment that is, is only going to create more anxiety.” – Oprah Winfrey
“Be the observer of your mind, so that the mind is not contolling you.” – Eckhart Tolle
“And that is how you eliminate stress and suffering.” – Oprah Winfrey
